Diagnose Your Car Sounds
  Â
One of the most common signs that your car may be due for service include strange sounds from different parts of the vehicle. Usually, these sounds are an indicator of underlying problems. Below are the most common car noises to be wary of.
Squeaky Brakes
The brakes are subjected to constant pressure and stress from everyday use, prompting the need for readjustments to get them back on track. Brakes will typically make abnormal noises when they need servicing. Squeaking sounds often indicate that parts of the brakes are wearing thin. This could be anything from brake pads to rotors. Visit a mechanic for brake lubrication and replacement of the worn-out parts.
Engine Rattling
In most cases, rattling sounds emanate from the engine. It is the result of pre-detonation or premature ignition. It can be triggered by several things, including wrong fuel octane, overheating of the engine, and poor ignition timing. These issues are often a result of improper mixing of air and fuel inside the engine cylinder, causing early ignition that can damage different parts, including the pistons, connecting rods, and valves.
Engine Clicking
Clicking sounds from the engine hint to low oil levels. Consider checking the oil levels using a dipstick. If the issue persists, it could be an upper valvetrain problem, including damaged or worn out parts and excessive valve lash.
Knocking Sounds Beneath the Hood
Any time you hear knocking sounds under the hood, consider driving straight to the mechanics. The problem might be major, such as having challenges with connecting rods, pistons, and valves. A mechanic will be able to tell if any other major issues exist.
Engine Squealing
Many things can cause engine squealing. For older vehicles, a loose or worn-out accessory belt, operating the components like the power steering pump, air conditioner, and alternator, could be the problem. If the car is new, the issue could be with the serpentine belt.
