Lexus debuted their new seating concept to the world this month at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Not only was this a momentous event, but the official reveal of this unique design may have a lasting impact in how automakers think about car seating in the future.
The Kinetic Seat Concept, also called the spider web seat, may look uncomfortable, but in fact it is just the opposite. The net you see in the photo is constructed from revolutionary fibers—including environmentally friendly synthetic spider silk. The seat is designed to be flexible and supportive, moving with the occupant to maintain stabilization and evenly distribute weight.
When we move around, our spines provide our heads and necks with stability. Otherwise, our heads would flop around as we walked, ran, jumped or did other physical activity. The kinetic seat is designed to mimic that kind of support and provide increased head and neck stabilization during driving. The protein fibers in the seat offers increased shock absorbance as well, which means drivers would feel less road vibrations.
While there is no way of knowing if or when this seating design will be incorporated into future new Lexus models, we do know that Lexus has recently developed other innovative seat designs. This is a tell-tale sign that great new features are forthcoming!
