With advanced safety technology and innovative driver-assist features, it’s no surprise that Lexus vehicles are some of the safest on the road. However, they also have the esteemed reputation from respected institutions to prove it. The IIHS recently awarded five new Lexus cars and SUVs with Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick Plus awards, a tremendous accomplishment especially given that the IIHS recently developed more rigorous criteria.
“Our focus remains on the safety and peace of mind of our customers,” said Dino Triantafyllos, Toyota Motor Corporation’s North American Chief Quality Officer. “We are proud that our commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles resulted in such a strong showing in [2017 Top Safety Pick Plus] awards.”
To be a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn top scores across all five of the crashworthiness tests: small overlap front, moderate overlap front, roof strength, side impact, and head restraints/seats. Additionally, a front crash prevention system, as well as high-quality headlights, must be available on the vehicle. To achieve the additional “Plus” denotation, the front crash prevention system must be rated “Advanced” or “Superior.”
Of the five Lexus models awarded, four took home the Top Safety Pick Plus title: ES 350, NX, RC and RX, and the CT200h earned a Top Safety Pick title. In addition to a rigid body structure with front and rear crumple zones, a high-quality airbag system and power-assisted brakes, each of the four are available with a variety of incredible safety technology that help prevent or lessen the impact of a collision. Such technology systems include a Backup Camera with Dynamic Gridlines, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Intuitive Parking Assist and a Pre-Collision System.
Additionally, some Lexus vehicles, like the 2017 RX, now come standard with the Safety System+ suite of driver-assist features. This package features the aforementioned Pre-Collision System as well as Intelligent High Beams, High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. As Lexus continues making its Safety System+ standard across its line-up, we expect to see even more models earning awards from the IIHS and other safety institutions.
